Signature Sound

For a long time I was not comfortable with the idea of having a "signature sound". I thought that if you have a style that style will eventually go out of style, then no one will want your style, and you're out of a job. While I very much believe in the idea of constant reinvention. I'm not so shy to the reality of my accumulating tendencies, and preferences. Thus discovering what I believe is my signature sound. And I'm pretty sure this piece optimizes it. I see elements in this piece showing up everywhere in my music these days. In fact if you go to my new and improved website (thank you Ryan Probasco!) you will most likely see what I mean.

Where I Disappeared To

I thought I'd share a bit of a movie I'm scoring. It is not mixed or sweetened in any way yet, so bear that in mind as you listen. There is a pay off at the end, so if you're not a big texture fan, remind yourself that you will eventually be glad you sat through the first two and a half minutes. Or just skip to the end.

I chose this piece to show because, honestly, it was convenient. I had shown this bit to the director over the interweb-net, and it is the only thing I have bounced from the recording session. But I like it.

There is no picture because the film has not dropped yet, and I want to be respectful to those who would rather people saw it without a time code, and other imperfections. This part is about a chair (who comes to life, and goes on a journey through the city). Here he is running away from scary things, then feeling depressed, then triumphant. To put it in a terrible nutshell.

So ever since I heard this version of Everybody's Free on the second season opener of The Venture Brothers (sorry I couldn't find the clip, it is very good!), I've been wanting to do some two step. I got a call from Sean at Natures Sunshine, he said they were shooting a work out video, and wondered if I would be interested in doing the music. I was. I even gave them a few minutes for free because it's so fun to write this music. I've put a couple snippets of the music on this video. The picture, by the way, is a screen shot of the song's Reason session because it is IMPOSSIBLE to find good pictures of aerobic workouts.

Crazy Random Happenstance

For episode 204 of the Generations Project... it would take too long to explain. Basically there are a lot of crazy random coincidences in the family history of a married couple, like a perfect genetic make up for an incredibly rare disease that will befall their twins. But it all comes together when a bone marrow transplant volunteer has a similare crazy randome family history which makes her the perfect doner to save this families twin boys. Is there a connection? Could they actually be relatives of the same desease surviving super family? Find out in season two of The Generations Project.

Anyway the idea of these pieces was to follow that feeling of perceived randomness that reveals an "ah ha" connection. Multiple instruments playing a single melody.

It is a sci phi, future, space based video game for iPhone. The creator made an incredibly detailed world, and story, with amazing graphics, especially considering it is for a mobile device (NOT SHOWN ABOVE).

Rocks, marimba, flute, and I got a penny whistle in there too. Sort of a rocks and wind theme. Oh, and a plastic water bottle hittin those low notes. Now that's recycling.

The Television premier for Stories From the Life of Porter Rockwell has come and gone, but that was just the half hour version you saw. The full length is coming to a Wal-Mart near you this May. With more scenes, and of course, new music. I'm not sure yet how they'll place it, but this piece was written for the gunfight between Porter and one of the "out laws" who made a bet that he could kill Porter despite the whole hair legend.

Winter

I'm a summertime person. I like it hot. I appreciate beauty in whatever form it comes in, and winter has that in spades, but winter is also very depressing with its short days, dark gray skies, layers of clothing, and general confinement to warm buildings. I respect winter though. It's dangerous and holy. Even magical. So I wanted to capture some of that feeling before this winter is gone. I wrote this piece a couple months or so ago, and filmed what I had hoped was the last snowfall of the year at my house. I shot it on Brian Sullivan's, my friend, and now neighbor's, Sony VX 1000 that I've been borrowing (I really need to give that back, and his leaf blower). Luckily it was handy as the snow started to come down. I was afraid I'd missed the last snowfall this year... then it snowed twice after that. Has it been a long winter for anyone else?

That little kid you see at the window is my son Nigel.

This is some music I am working on for a documentary about Orrin Porter Rockwell. This piece is about half way done I think, but I thought I'd put it up to see what people thought, and kind of show what I've been up to in the last few days.

On a side note. Grant (Orrin) Olsen and I got to help out in the filming of the Documentary as extras for some "B" roll (flashback footage) as Missourian "mobbers". I'll post some pics when I get them. I saw footage yesterday at the Issimo Productions office. We are looking pretty badical with our torches and such, well at least Grant is. I look a bit like Michael Landon from Little House on The Prairie. Pics to come.

So sss4wg played last Saturday, and as you can see by this picture Jon took on his insta-film camera, Bret is drumming! His show in California was canceled, so he was able to be with us after all, so I didn't have to drum and sing.

I think it was not a bad show for being our first in nine months. We even played a couple new songs.

It was good to see my loyal readers out, and to know that I have some!

A New TV Series I Did Music For

I did music on a couple of episodes for this series, one of which I'm very excited about. So if you are free Thursday night around 7:30, come on up to the Jesse Knight Humanities Building (number 50 on the map) at BYU and check it out. The episodes are short, so you will really only be carving an hour out of your life, but it will be an hour well spent.

I should also mention that since it is at 7:30 there will be plenty of free parking.

Saint Sebastian's School For wicked Girls had it's first practice in almost a year tonight, unless you count Ashley Mackay's birthday party, prepairing for a show at Muse Music this Saturday. Our drummer Bret will be in California touring with his much more (real, serious, going places, actual) better band Rape Escape, I think, so we practiced as we will play, as a three piece with Cole playing my parts on the guitar, and me drumming and singing. We were a little freaked out at the beginning of the night when we sounded like it was the first time we had used our arms, but by nine-ish it was starting to look like we may not get booed off stage after all. Either way it will be an entertaining show, so come see.

I'm going to start posting things I've been working on as of late. I always wanted to be a consistent blogger, and now I think I have enough material that I can finally post a steady stream of work.
This first few will be from the TV show The Generations Project, which will air on BYUTV in January, 2010. It's a documentary style show about people who solve mysteries in their family history using genealogy, and travel to their ancestral land to explore their heritage. Or something like that. This first piece is from a show about Ireland.

Portable Mic Stand

Trying to work while traveling, you are always (I'm sure it's not just me) inventing a better mouse trap of functional production tools. In this case I was trying to make a light weight, collapsible mic stand that would easily fit into my brief case which also holds the Digidesign Mbox2 AD/DA converter/preamp, a large diaphragm condenser microphone, an sm 57 Sure mic, the cables for both, pop guard, and USB cable for the Mbox2.

I'm using 3/4" PVC pipe, cutting 2 16"(the length of the inside of the briefcase), 4 8", and 2 4" pieces, with locking pruning sheers .

Building the base.

You can see here, I used three T pieces, one connector piece, and four caps on the base legs for stability.

The mic base stands in a connector piece at the top of the pipe.

I also made a stereo mic set up that attaches to the top. I don't have a picture but I may put one up later.
At the end of the night I recorded two pieces for the TV show I'm doing. Which I will start posting music from soon.

I get to up and leave town whenever I like with this job, as long as I can work where I'm from. My parents house is bigger these days so I can usually find a room quiet enough, and far away enough from the rest of the goings on that I can record a guitar or some other live instrument if I need to. Sometimes I can get away with just using a midi program like Reason or EWQLSO to create a piece, or at least a descent mock up, and then have the live version done later. On this morning I started out building a work space solution for my midi controller, and lap top. it ended up looking like this.

...and very sturdy.

But just as I was ready to resign myself to a wonderful day of sitting inside digitaly encoding music for a TV show, and sighing at the sunlight shining through the windows. My Parents found a project for my brother (Cedric who was in town for the family reunion, as was I) and myself to help out with. So in the next few hours my parents, my brother, my wife and I built one of those swing/slide/climb play houses for the grand kids. It looked good after we finished, but it needed one last thing. So I spent the rest of the day making a pirate flag for it.

I was recently at a film editors studio looking at footage for a possible scoring job, and noticed that the guy was using a tablet and stylus instead of a mouse. My life changed in one second after seeing that. Until then I was obsessing over a solution for my aching wrist and lack tedious accuracy in my Pro Tools Edits. So I got this Bamboo Wacom tablet for like fifty bucks off Craig's List. It took some getting used to, but I love it.

Early one morning as I was jumping into the Micah Mobile (my scooter) to head off to the studio, I got a call from Cole Nielsen asking if I could join him and Joseph LeBaron at the Inside Sales building on the Novell campus in south Provo. You see, Glenn Beck was coming to town to speak at a fancy dinner type thingy, you probably saw the billboard if you frequent the i15, and Mitt Romney was going to introduce him via satellite. What does that have to do with anything you axe? Apparently Inside Sales, where Cole is Master and Commander of all things design, had the opportunity to place in front of Mitt, what
we recently found out was called a bumper, but
at the time could only think to call it a Snarf Blatt, for lack of a real definition, and a loss of how to find the real definition. I mean, what is Google supposed to come up with when you type... "you know that thingy that production companies and studios put at the beginning of movies, and stuff... like the FOX, and MGM lion... thingy!" into the search field? I finally found it a few days later, and promptly texted it to everyone involved at about two in the morning.

Digressions aside, I arrived at the Novell Campus, and was briefed on the assignment. Glenn Beck was coming the next day, and we had this one working Friday to come up with something super badical (not my words). To make a long, hilarious and other wise interesting story short, we did it. And Cole put it on You Tube. Check it out.

Ever since Camille and I introduced our son Nigel to Helio Sequence this is the only song he will listen to in the car, which is where I do the greatest majority of my music listening. Every time the song ends (and sometimes after it has only just begun) Nigel will yell out in his cutest pleading voice, "Gen, gen... pweez!" we easily oblige. It's been his favorite for over two weeks now, and I'm still not sick of it. I think I said in an earlyer post that this album is the best of 2008, and I stand by it. Good taste Nigel.

My cousin Devon is a contender for the worlds greatest prankster. Tonight he sent me this seemingly harmless e-card that plays Dance of The Sugar Plum Fairies as it politely asks you to click on certain items in the picture that bring holiday cheer. "Click on the lamp post" it would say, "Click on the RED present... come on". As I clicked on each Item I braced myself for the inevitable screaming picture of the girl from The Exorcist to pop out, or Santa to come around the corner and moon me. But nothing happened! It was actually harmless.

I confess I was disappointed. Is Devon going soft on me? Or is he even more diabolical? Maybe he's been setting me up my whole life for the freak me out with nothing prank. Probably.

This is one of the best songs to listen to while riding some sort of two wheeled transportation. I used to ride my scooter fifteen miles to and from The Music School were I used to teach guitar, percussion, recording, and band classes, all on back roads since it wasn't fast enough to go on the free way. Listening to this album, and riding that scooter took me to a very nice place (of mind).

Motorcrash, A Proper Motorcrash

I can't believe no one commented on yesterday's song of the day. That is one of the most beautiful songs ever. I totally learned it to play for my wedding band, and got to perform it twice at the Utah State Hospital-Psychiatric Christmas Dinner. Once for the Forensics dinner, which was a bit scary (those are the murderers and rapists), and then at the administration building. My good buddy Joe LeBaron works there, and asked if I'd play some of there favorites. He is one of the coolest guys this world has to offer.

Another thing about yesterday's post is how old that guy is. He said he was twenty two "or what ever", but he seems much older to me, maybe it's the beard, but my actual theory is that he has a very old soul, maybe thirty or forty lives under his belt.

Finlay lets talk about today's post. I grew up with the Sugar Cubes, though we never actually bought this album. You may recognize this cute little number as Bjork in the musical act Bjork. OK, last thing. I have been using You tube a lot lately to do my posts, not because I do a lot of you tube surfing. I don't. The new Mac Book Pros are out. Which means the old ones are cheaper! A perfect time to buy. Which I did, for about a thousand and some less than what I would have paid the day before. Thanks not only to the new version, but also Cole's student discount, and the BYU bookstore's sale. Yeah! And to tell you the truth, I much prefer the old one to the new, for a few reasons.

First the new ones only come with a glossy screen, which to me is very annoying. I like to sit in sunny places.
I'm not that into the black. I like the Chiclet keys alright, but I'm betting the next generation with look better.
I don't like that there is only one firewire port and it isn't the one you'd regularly use (400) it's the 800. Which has it's advantages for speed, granted, but it makes your current cables, and some hardware incompatible, and those weren't cheap. They invented firewire, they can do what they like. I suppose it isn't that big a deal, but I'd rather wait 'till the next generation to deal with it.
It has that wonderful solid body, and the display is LCD and glass which is great. The track pad is also very cool. All glass and the entire pad is the button. Wonderful stuff that I will enjoy someday, but the guts are about the same. Not any faster.

For my applications the computer I bought is the better one I think. The only thing I can complain about is the disappearance of a the numeric keypad that used to be on the UIO JKL M keys. I know most people, especially the casual mac users, don't use them, but for some of my applications, especially Reason 4 (big angry blog to come), I very much need them. I spent a good part of my day today trying to figure a way around this, searching blogs, FAQ's on both Reason's, and Apple's sites, then even more on the phone with apples "geniuses", but there apparently is no way around it. It's just gone.  What's that you say? Just go get a numeric keypad USB thingy? You would have thought I'd thought of that. NO! The whole point of having the lappy is to be portable. I can't go lugging around more and more stuff that should already be at my finger tips. Besides the only two USB ports are already being used by my midi key board (blog to come) and the Mbox2 Micro (blog also to come). But I'm not licked yet. I still have some exploring to do yet in Reason.

Last night I dreamt that I was giving campaign advice to John McCain. He was in the studio laying down some twelve bar blues crap, when I noticed how at home he looked with a Les Paul strapped on. So I told him he should take some pictures of himself and spread them around.

All night I was giving him great advice like going back on the Late Show and making up for his snub by playing in the band intermittently. But he would always only take half of my advice. He did take a picture but it was in a disgusting silk shirt that he unbuttoned to below his chest, and he put a wig on, and put it in a pony tail. I tried to convince him that that was a bad idea, but he had this pant suit woman who kept giving him bad advice, and he was taking it.

We went on to talk about playing late shows and doing SNL again, I told him how it worked for Clinton when he ran against Bush. and he said "Oh yeah, back in '87!" I think we ended the dream with me saying "this is Obama's race to loose".
Weird dream.

So Cole Nielsen and I were just talking about how hard it is to say his name, because your tongue is so busy with the L sound in Cole, that it's not ready for the N in Nielsen. And it made me think about Demetri Martin and what he said about Cotton Balls. Cotton Balls are great as a product, but I would hate to have them as a nickname. "Hi I'm Larry, that guys name is Joe, and this is Cotton Balls". This lead me to realize something that would help me blog more, and better. I should do a funny quote of the day, or, best song I heard for the day. Maybe a trade off day to day. Or I could just stay lazy. We'll see.

In this line of work your life style is either comfortable, or pauper-ish depending whether you have many jobs and much money or a few jobs and no money. This is commonly referred to as Feast and Famine. During one of my many famines my wife Camille and I had this conversation- which I am not making up. "...no Micah, until we have cash we can SHARE a toothbrush ". This was in response to my suggesting we use the credit card (which we were using to buy gas with that night instead of Nigel's birthday money) to replace my toothbrush when all the bristles fell out in my mouth. Which is very anticlimactic as far as brushing your teeth goes. You're hoping to get this wonderful clean feeling but instead your pulling little plastic hairs out of your mouth all day. Any way, good times.

The Documentary

First off I should talk about what the doc is. Once upon a time Jacob Hoehne was so fed up with all the urban legends circulating around his Utah home, he decided to learn for himself once and for all weather or not they were true or contrived. So he collected his favorites stories, both LDS urban legends such as "Was Yoda patterned after President Kimbal?", and Utah's own Urban legends such as "Are there whales in the Great Salt lake?", then Report his findings in a documentary. So he assembled a crew of flat feet-ed sleuths, and competent film makers, and got to work. Two years later we're wrapping it up and preparing it for it's debut. Which will be this October 4th, on the TV (I don't remember which network is showing it, I'll put that up later) after the Saturday afternoon LDS General Conference session. So tune in , and prepare to have your minds blown!


Staying Up Late to Reach Deadlines is Hazardous to Your Health

I've been trying to make deadlines for a documentary that will be airing very soon. And these deadlines have caused me to miss a lot of sleep, And put many other things, such as blogging, aside to reach them. But a lot of nifty things happened during that crunch time that will be fun to read about I think. So keep on coming back.

Never show your work off at the and of the work day. When you feel good about what you've done LEAVE! Show it off in the morning before you start. Your work is rarely as good as you think at the end of a tiring day. If you show it to someone they'll, if they're respectable, give you honest constructive feedback about how it sucks, and then you'll go home feeling like you've accomplished nothing. That makes you feel like a looser. Which makes you lash out at people bigger than you in the Wendy's line because they can't make up their mind. Which makes you get beaten up. Which makes you feel like a looser again. Its a vicious cycle.

From the early days of my impressionable youth (like seven) I have held a special love in my heart for postum. A very popular alternative for coffee for LDS homes (which I grew up in) in the early days of the church wide practice of the word of wisdom (1902-ish). As the years went by a substitute for coffee was ever less and less in demand since people gradually left the culture (cafes, tea parties, poetry slams) alone all together, save a few of us stalwarts. Sadly, after one hundred and twelve years the company, Kraft Foods, stopped making Postum last fall because "the demand for it was so low that manufacturing it no longer made sense". Sucks for me. Any way, the only way for me to get the precious stuff is to buy it off eBay which is too expensive, or switch to its wanting imitator Pero. A sad thought for a purist like me. Resigned to my woeful state one morning I was surprised by the second most kind and charitable act of my summer. Sienna and Tony Dittmer had overheard my many laments over the tragic discontinuance and decided to give me their last two unopened jars of the rich blessed goodness! I felt like someone had just given me a panda. Sienna, who frequents the squatterStudio, walked in a few mornings ago, and casually pulled two albino rhinoceroses from her bag and set them on my desk. I was flabbergasted. Suddenly we started doing the Coffee Shop dialog from Pulp Fiction.

I am a bad blogger. I know it. But in general I'm a bad internet guy. I have a lot of work to do these days, so I just don't spend any more time on the net than it takes to check an email or Google something. So forgive me please for not updating this blog regularly.
